Prototyping

Where virtual designs evolve into physical models, ideal for presenting or testing to refine the design, whether it’s a space model (to show physical appearance) or a fully functional model. Our prototyping service is an important stepping stone in the development process. We use 3D printing technologies such as Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), Stereolithography (SLA) and Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) to create printed prototypes as well as also using CNC/milling machine, lathes etc. from a variety of materials such as plastic, aluminium and steel.

What is Prototyping?

A prototype is an early sample of the product, where the sample is built to evaluate the design physically rather than a theoretical 3D model. Prototypes are incredibly important part of the design process as it’s another layer to find issues or change the direction prior to investing in manufacturing. Prototypes are not always a full working product in the correct materials, they can be space models to show the look or feel of the product. Or they can be partial products to test specific areas that don’t require the whole product being made. Prototype methods vary and depend on what the product is and what the prototype is needed for. They could be constructed from wood, metal, plastics, ceramics, etc. 3D prints are often used for prototypes as they are typically quick and accurate and are an automated process which can reduce costs. However, you are limited to the 3D printing materials available and may not accurately reflect the production materials that would be chosen. It might be that multiple methods are used to test and show different areas of the products. These physical models can also be used as low volume production parts. Most of the time there is low to no setup costs, but parts prices compared to production parts are generally much higher. We can discuss the requirements to guide you in which direction to go in.
